Otoplasty (Ear Pinning)

Candidates for otoplasty, commonly known as ear pinning surgery, include individuals who are self-conscious about their ears protruding too far from their heads. This procedure is suitable for adults and children after the age of 7.

Ideal candidates are those in good overall health, without any serious medial conditions or untreated chronic ear conditions.

Otoplasty can be performed using various techniques depending on the specific needs of the patient. The most common technique involves making an incision just behind the ear, in the natural fold where the ear joins the head. Dr. Tieman, our board-certified plastic surgeon, will then remove or reshape the cartilage through this incision to bring the ears to a more natural appearance.

An ear pinning procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia. The procedure usually takes about two to three hours, depending on the extent of the surgery. Surgical incisions will be made on the back of the ears to expose the ear cartilage. The cartilage is then sculpted or removed and repositioned closer to the head, depending on the desired outcome. 

The recovery process for otoplasty usually involves wearing a special headband to help hold the ears to their new shape and to protect them, especially at night. Patients commonly experience swelling, bruising and minor discomfort after the procedure, but these symptoms typically subside within a few weeks. Most patients can return to school or work within a week, though it is recommended to avoid strenuous activities and contact sports for at least a month to prevent trauma to the ears while they heal.
