Breast Cancer Reconstruction

Candidates for breast cancer reconstruction surgery are typically those who have already or are planning on undergoing a mastectomy or lumpectomy as part of their breast cancer treatment. We will meet to discuss your options for reconstruction according to your goals and priorities. 

Ideal candidates are in good overall health, and do not smoke, as smoking can impede the healing process. The decision for reconstruction is highly personal, and timing can vary; some women choose immediate reconstruction during their cancer surgery, while others may wait months or years to undergo the procedure. Breast cancer reconstruction techniques vary depending on individual needs and preferences. The most common methods include implant-based reconstruction, which uses saline or silicone implants to reshape the breast, and autologous or flap reconstruction, which involves using tissue transplanted from another part of the patient’s body, such as the abdomen, back or buttocks.

Each technique has its benefits and considerations, such as matching the look and feel of the natural breast, recovery time and potential impact on other body areas. The choice of technique typically depends on the patient's body type, medical history, aesthetic goals, and the specifics of the breast cancer treatment they've undergone. Dr. Tieman will work closely with you to select the method that best aligns with your health status and desired outcomes.

Typical reconstruction consists of placing a tissue expander either over or under the pectoralis muscle. This is often used in conjunction with an acellular dermal matrix to help secure the implant to your chest wall.  The skin is then closed over this device and we wait until your scars are healed to start the expansion process. 

The procedure’s timing can be immediate, occurring concurrently with your cancer surgery or delayed, taking place months or years later. The goal is to create a breast shape that looks natural and symmetrical from side to side, helping to restore your body image and confidence post-cancer treatment.

Recovery from breast reconstruction surgery varies depending on the technique used and the individual's overall health. Typically, patients can expect to spend one to several days in the hospital following the procedure. The initial recovery period usually involves managing discomfort with prescribed medications and minimizing activity to promote healing.

Drains may be placed to prevent fluid accumulation and are usually removed within a week or two. Patients generally require several weeks to feel well enough to return to normal activities and may need to avoid strenuous exercise for up to six weeks. Follow-up appointments are crucial to monitor healing and address any concerns. Emotional healing is also an important aspect of recovery, as regaining a sense of normalcy and body confidence can take time.

Reconstructive surgery can significantly restore the appearance of the breast after mastectomy or lumpectomy, helping patients regain a sense of wholeness and body confidence. The final shape and feel of the reconstructed breast will depend on multiple factors, the chosen reconstruction technique, other cancer treatments you have undergone, and whether implant-based or autologous tissue reconstruction was utilized.

While results are designed to be long-lasting, they may change over time due to factors like aging, weight fluctuations and hormonal changes. It's important to have realistic expectations since a reconstructed breast will not have the exact look or sensation as your original breast. Regular follow-up appointments are essential to assess the aesthetics and maintain the health of your reconstructed breast.
